Community Guidelines
Help keep Niles Connect useful, respectful, and community-focused.
These guidelines apply when participating in community features,
submitting information, creating activities, connecting with others,
or using other interactive parts of Niles Connect.
Core expectations
Participate in a way that helps the community.
Niles Connect works best when people share useful information,
communicate respectfully, and use the site’s tools for legitimate
community purposes.
Be respectful
Disagree with ideas without attacking, harassing, threatening,
or humiliating other people.
Be relevant
Keep submissions connected to Niles, the local community,
or the purpose of the specific feature you are using.
Be accurate
Share what you know, distinguish firsthand observations from
assumptions, and avoid presenting rumors as established facts.
Use good judgment
Consider whether the information you are sharing is genuinely useful
to other residents and whether posting it could create unnecessary
harm or privacy concerns.
Use the right tool
Community updates, help requests, local offers, business listings,
activities, public records, and camera reports each have their own
appropriate workflow.
Respect moderation decisions
Content may be reviewed, delayed, edited where appropriate,
declined, or removed under the site’s moderation rules.
Privacy
Protect personal information.
Community participation should not expose unnecessary private,
sensitive, or identifying information about yourself or others.
Do not post sensitive data
Avoid sharing passwords, financial information, Social Security
numbers, medical information, private account details,
or other unnecessary sensitive data.
Be careful with addresses
Do not publish a private home address unless there is a legitimate
reason and the person whose information is involved has chosen
to make it public.
Think before identifying someone
Avoid naming or identifying private individuals unnecessarily,
particularly in safety reports, disputes, accusations,
or other sensitive contexts.
Community profiles are optional
Only add information to your community profile that you are
comfortable sharing with participating members.
Respect other people’s privacy
Do not use Niles Connect to expose private conversations,
personal records, private photographs, or other material
that you do not have a legitimate reason to publish.
Use private channels appropriately
If information does not need to be shared publicly,
use a more appropriate private method of communication.
Not allowed
Content that does not belong on Niles Connect
The following types of behavior or content may be removed
and may result in restrictions on participation.
Threats & harassment
Threatening, stalking, targeted harassment, bullying,
or repeated unwanted contact is not appropriate.
Hate or dehumanizing attacks
Do not use the site to attack people based on protected
or personal characteristics.
Spam & manipulation
Repetitive spam, deceptive promotion, coordinated manipulation,
or misuse of community tools may be removed.
Fraud or scams
Do not use Niles Connect to deceive others, solicit money
dishonestly, impersonate another person, or facilitate a scam.
Illegal activity
Do not use the site to facilitate unlawful conduct
or intentionally distribute unlawful material.
Explicit or inappropriate content
Content that is clearly unsuitable for a general community website
may be removed even when it does not fit another category.
Safety-related posts
Share safety information responsibly.
Safety-related content can be particularly sensitive.
Focus on useful observations and avoid turning community reporting
into rumor, accusation, or unnecessary identification of individuals.
Describe what happened
Include useful facts such as location, date, time,
conditions, and firsthand observations where relevant.
Avoid speculation
Do not present assumptions about someone’s motives, identity,
guilt, or intent as if they are established facts.
Protect people when appropriate
Avoid publishing unnecessary identifying information,
especially involving children, victims, private residents,
or sensitive situations.
Businesses & offers
Keep business participation useful.
Use accurate business information
Business listings should use factual public information
and should not intentionally misrepresent ownership,
services, location, or availability.
Avoid excessive promotion
Local offers should be relevant to the community
and should not overwhelm general community spaces.
No implied endorsement
Inclusion in the directory or approval of an offer does not mean
Niles Connect endorses or guarantees a business, service, or product.
Activities & connections
Participate safely and respectfully.
Respect boundaries
A connection request does not create an obligation to respond,
meet, communicate, or continue interacting.
Choose meetings carefully
Use appropriate public settings and good judgment when meeting
someone you first encountered through an online community tool.
Use blocking and reporting tools
If another participant’s behavior becomes inappropriate,
use available blocking or reporting options where provided.
Moderation
How these guidelines are enforced
Niles Connect may review community submissions and participation
to help maintain a useful and workable community environment.
Content may be reviewed
Some submissions are held for review before they appear publicly.
Content may be removed
Material may be declined or removed when it violates these
guidelines, site policies, or the intended use of a feature.
Accounts may be restricted
Repeated or serious misuse of interactive features may result
in limits on participation.
Moderation is not the same as verification.
A community submission being approved for publication does not mean
Niles Connect independently verified every factual statement contained
in that submission.
Related policies
Read the rules behind community participation.
The Moderation Policy explains how content may be reviewed,
while the Privacy Policy and Safety page provide additional guidance.
