Moderation Policy

How community content is reviewed and managed.

Niles Connect may review community submissions and participation
to help keep the site useful, respectful, safe, and consistent
with its intended purpose.

Purpose

Why moderation exists

Moderation is intended to help prevent spam, abuse, harassment,
privacy problems, inappropriate content, duplicate submissions,
and misuse of community tools.

Protect usefulness

Community spaces should remain focused on information,
participation, and tools that are useful to the Niles community.

Protect participants

Moderation may be used to address harassment, threats,
privacy violations, unwanted targeting, or other harmful behavior.

Protect the platform

Spam, scams, automated abuse, duplicate submissions,
and misuse of site features may be limited or removed.

Review process

How moderation works

Different Niles Connect tools may use different review workflows,
but the general approach is similar.

Some content is held for review

Certain submissions may remain pending until they have been reviewed
before becoming publicly visible.

Some content may be reviewed after publication

Published content may still be reviewed if a concern is reported
or if a problem becomes apparent later.

Different features have different workflows

Community posts, help requests, local offers, business listings,
activities, and camera reports may not all use the same moderation
process or publication status.

Content decisions

What may happen to submitted or published content

Depending on the issue, Niles Connect may take one or more
moderation actions.

Approve

Content that is appropriate for the feature may be approved
and made publicly visible.

Leave pending

A submission may remain pending while additional review
or clarification is needed.

Decline

Content may be declined if it does not fit the site’s purpose,
violates the guidelines, or presents another moderation concern.

Remove

Published material may be removed if a problem is identified
after publication.

Edit or correct where appropriate

In limited situations, obvious formatting, privacy, or technical
issues may be corrected when doing so does not materially change
the meaning of the submission.

Limit visibility

Some content may remain available to administrators or the
submitting user while being removed from public display.

Common reasons

Why content may be moderated

Harassment or threats

Targeted harassment, threats, stalking, intimidation,
or repeated unwanted contact may be removed.

Privacy concerns

Content exposing unnecessary sensitive or private information
may be limited or removed.

Spam or duplicate content

Repetitive submissions, promotional flooding,
automated content, or duplicates may be removed.

Scams or deception

Fraudulent, deceptive, impersonating, or manipulative content
may be removed and may lead to account restrictions.

Irrelevant content

Material unrelated to Niles, the local community,
or the purpose of the specific feature may be declined.

Unsafe or inappropriate content

Content that creates significant safety concerns or is clearly
unsuitable for a general community platform may be removed.

Account restrictions

Moderation may also apply to participation privileges.

Serious or repeated misuse of interactive features may result
in limits on an account’s ability to participate.

Feature restrictions

Access to a specific interactive feature may be limited
when that feature is being misused.

Temporary restrictions

Participation may be limited temporarily while a concern
is reviewed or after repeated guideline violations.

Longer-term restrictions

Serious abuse, fraud, threats, repeated harassment,
or persistent misuse may justify longer restrictions.

Important distinction

Moderation is not factual verification.

A submission being approved for publication does not mean
Niles Connect independently confirmed every statement
contained in it.

Verification Policy →

Moderation asks whether content belongs

Review may focus on relevance, safety, privacy,
spam, conduct, and whether the submission is appropriate
for the feature.

Verification asks whether claims are supported

Independent factual verification is a separate process
that may require records, source material, corroboration,
or additional reporting.

Community content remains community content

Approval does not convert a resident submission into
Niles Connect editorial reporting or an official record.

If you believe content should be reviewed or have a question
about a moderation decision, provide enough information
to identify the specific content or account issue involved.

Moderation cannot prevent every problem.

Niles Connect may not identify every inaccurate statement,
inappropriate submission, privacy issue, spam message, or misuse
before it becomes visible. Community members should continue
to use good judgment when relying on or responding to user-submitted content.
